Clean and Healthy New York Stands in Solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Movement

Clean and Healthy New York stands in full support of those in our community protesting against the violent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, David McAtee, and the countless other Black lives lost at the hands of white supremacy and systemic racism within our country’s justice system. Our organization’s staff and Board denounce police brutality and the systems that have allowed the actions of a corrupt police state to go unchecked for far too long.

Following the tragic murder of George Floyd by officers of the Minneapolis Police Department on May 25, 2020, we bear witness to the incredible power and influence of social justice groups across New York, the United States, and the entire world. Thousands upon thousands of people have gathered peacefully to protest the injustices that allowed the police to murder George Floyd and other Black men, women, and children, but their cries for justice have been muffled by continued abuse of non-violent protestors by the police and other racist agitators.

This has to stop.

Clean and Healthy New York was founded to advocate for the environmental health and safety of our communities. But our work extends far beyond fighting for the environment, because as we know, the intersections between environmental and racial justice are tightly connected.

It is no secret that Black communities in the United States are exposed to dangers from all sides, from environmental and institutionalized racism to a broken and corrupt justice and economic system that targets their livelihoods. The COVID-19 pandemic put a spotlight on structural injustice as the Centers for Disease Control reports Black neighborhoods are seeing a higher rate of infection and death in disproportionate and high numbers because of the systemic racism that has ravaged these communities for decades. This is while Black and Brown people are providing essential front-line services, often in environmentally unhealthy situations, at the expense of their own personal health.

We all have a responsibility to stand up against these injustices. Clean and Healthy New York is here to stand with and fight for our Black brothers and sisters.

Black lives matter.
