Clean and Healthy New York (CHNY) is an advocacy organization building a just society in which toxic chemicals are unthinkable. Since our founding in 2006, we have driven New York State’s environmental health leadership. We won bans on BPA in baby bottles, PFAS in food service ware, and flame retardants in furnishings. In 2020, we secured our keystone policy, the Child Safe Products Act. We have driven national retail chain buybuy BABY to establish a Restricted Substances List, phase out flame retardants in nursery items, and end presence of harmful chemicals in personal care and cleaning products. About the position

We seek a Director of Programs, a salaried (exempt) position, who will work closely with and report to the Executive Director to oversee and direct implementation of CHNY’s campaigns and programs.

This position requires existing knowledge of the toxics movement or a strong desire to immediately engage in the steep learning curve required to become knowledgeable, and a passion for advocating to protect people and the planet from the harm caused by toxic chemicals.

 

You will need experience in campaign design, implementation, and management. You must engage in long-range planning while remaining nimble in the face of new opportunities or threats. Our organization is highly collaborative, internally between staff and Board, and externally with a broad range of constituencies. It requires a willingness to take risks, to experiment to identify effective strategies and tactics, and an ability to recognize and grow from mistakes. All members of our staff are involved in fundraising, including this position. You will need to put campaign plans into writing for grant proposals, develop program budgets, and prepare final reports. The Director of Programs will provide clear feedback to other program staff, and frank assessments to the Executive Director.

 

Job Responsibilities

Plan programs

  • Plan the overall programs, long-term goals and objectives, and activities in accordance with CHNY's mission and goals, in collaboration with the Executive Director, with input from relevant staff

  • Develop new initiatives to advance the strategic direction of the organization

  • Develop annual budget and operating plan to support programs

  • Develop evaluation frameworks to assess program strengths and areas for improvement

  • Develop funding proposals for the program to ensure sufficient resources for each campaign

Staff and Lead the programs

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to recruit, interview and select well-qualified program staff, and to assess their performance

  • Direct and work with the Campaign Manager, Program Associate, and interns to execute the program plans, ensuring they operate within the policies and procedures of the organization

  • Document program activities

  • Support new staff through orientation and appropriate training

  • Communicate with allies and stakeholders to gain support for the programs and to solicit input to improve them

Control the programs

  • Report out on programs for management and funders

  • Ensure grant proposals and other materials align with program goals and outcomes

  • Ensure that programs operate within the approved budget

  • Monitor the program activities and evaluate quarterly according to the evaluation framework

  • Report evaluation findings to the Executive Director and recommend changes to enhance programs, as appropriate

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual with team management experience to grow and further develop CHNY’s programs. The successful candidate will lead programs, partner with the ED and work collaboratively with a high-performance management team.

To fit in this position, you will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher level of education, preferably in field of study focused on the environment or public health

  • Five or more years of experience, including team management experience

  • Proficient in using technology for program management, content development, communications

  • Strong project management skills managing complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes and program growth

  • Experience working with a high-performance, collaborative, constructive peer group

  • Strength in developing, coaching, and retaining individuals and teams, empowering them to expand their competencies and responsibilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to details

  • Personal qualities of collaboration, authenticity, foresight, and courage, a commitment to racial justice, and passion for CHNY’s mission

 

Compensation

We offer a salary commensurate with experience, paired with benefits that include a flexible work schedule, paid vacation days, sick and personal time, and holidays, health insurance, retirement contributions, and access to a cell phone and service.
